We love pizza! All day, everyday! So obviously, we need to have pizza during our camping trips! We do have a little oven in our RV but it’s much better to make it over a campfire! So here is my recipe for a campfire skillet pizza! I usually make plain cheese pizza because that’s what my daughter likes but you could make any kind of pizza with this basic cheese pizza recipe!
Ingredients you’ll need
- Pizza dough
- Flour
- Salt
- Instant yeast
- Olive oil
- Water
- Tomato sauce
- Cheese
How to make a pizza dough
Mix the instant yeast with warm water in a small bowl. Set aside.
In a large bowl or a clean surface (since it’s camping I use a big bowl but feel free to use your counter top if you’re at home), make a hole in your flour.
Pour the yeast in the middle of the flour.
Add the olive oil and water.
Using your hands, or your kids hands, bring the flour toward the centre until everything is mixed together.
Knead the dough for a few minutes until it doesn’t stick to the bowl or your hands.
Cover the ball of dough with a clean tea towel and set aside for 1 hour, until it doubles in volume.
Prepare your skillet pizza
Using olive oil, grease the your cast iron skillet.
Flatten the pizza dough inside the skillet and set aside to rise for 20 minutes.
After the 20 minutes, scoop a couple of spoons of tomato sauce on the dough and spread around.
Add grated cheese on top.
How to bake a Campfire Skillet Pizza
Start a fire and let it die down completely.
Place a few rocks or a grill grate over the hot coals.
Put the cast iron skillet over the rocks and cover with a dutch oven lid.
Place a few hot rocks or hot coals on the lid and let it cook for about 20 minutes.
And voila! You can make pizza anywhere now!
