We love camping but it’s not because we are out in the woods that we are about to eat store bought food! So we cook, we bake and we make desserts! We do have a kitchen in our RV but we never use it! We prefer to cook over the campfire! Cooking and baking on an open fire can be a little tricky but it’s also a lot of fun and it make really tasty food! This Campfire Skillet Berry Crumble only takes a few seconds to prep and a few minutes to cook and it’s very delicious!
Ingredients you’ll need
I tried to keep this recipe simple and only use a few ingredients, so here is the list:
- Fresh Berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries…)
- Sugar
- Flour
- Almond Flour
- Butter
How to make this Skillet Berry Crumble
This campfire crumble cooks on hot coal not on flames so you’ll need plenty of time to make a fire and then let it die!
While your fire is burning, start making your dessert.
Butter the bottom of your cast iron skillet.
Add the fresh berries and sugar.
In a small bowl, mix the flour, almond flour and sugar. With your fingers mix in the butter until the dough makes little chunks.
Place the little chunks of dough on the berries. We like more fruits that dough in our crumbles but if you like more, go ahead and double the recipe for the dough, no judgement here!
How to bake a Skillet Crumble on a campfire
Once the fire is out and only hot coals remain, place a few rocks on the coals (or if you are feeling fancy, a grill grate) and place your skillet on top.
Cover your berry crumble with the lid of a cast iron dutch oven or some aluminium foil and let cook!
The baking time will depend on the temperature of the fire but it can take anywhere between 20 minutes and 1 hour!
Serve your Campfire Skillet Berry Crumble warm with a scoop of my no churn ice cream and enjoy the perfect summer camping dessert!
