Apple Pie

Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Growing up in France, Apple Pie was more of an Apple Tart or a Tarte Tatin! The big, beautiful, double crusted Apple Pie was just a thing we would see in movies! So, one of the first thing I tried when I moved to Canada was one of those pies! And it was so good! I decided to try and make one! Over the years, I perfected my recipe and now this Apple Pie recipe is one of my family fall favourite! Perfect dessert on a rainy weekend, Thanksgiving (which was also a completely new tradition for me!) or any time someone from France visits us!

Ingredients you’ll need

  • 2 flaky pie crusts
  • Apples
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Lemon Juice

How to make the perfect Apple Pie

First thing you’ll need to make is the pie crust. You could buy one but the flaky pie crust you need for this pie is super easy to make and you’ll only need 3 ingredients to make it! You can find my recipe for a super easy flaky pie crust here.

Preheat the oven at 350F (180C).

Then it’s time for the apple pie filling. Peel and cut this apples. Here you have a choice between, cubes, slices or anything in between! Keep in mind that the smaller the apple pieces the quicker it will cook!

In a large bowl, mix the apples, the flour, the sugar and the cinnamon.

Roll down the first pie crust and put it in a pie pan. Using a fork, punch some little holes in the dough.

Next, scoop the apple pie filling into the crust.

Roll down the second ball of pie dough.

How to decorate your Apple Pie

Here you have a few options.

First way, the easiest one, you could simply cover the apple filling with the whole dough and make some little holes for the steam to escape.

The second way is a little more time consuming but it is prettier and way more impressive! You can go for the lattice pie crust. In order to make a lattice pie crust, start by cutting the dough into stripes. Lay stripes vertically on the pie filling, evenly spaced. Then, fold every other stipe in half. Place one stipe horizontally on top of the other stripes. Unfold the stripes to cover the one you just placed. Next, fold the other stripes (the ones you didn’t the first time) and repeat. Once you are done with this half, do the other half the same way.

Then, pinch the top dough on the bottom dough so it doesn’t move during baking. Cut the excess dough to make it pretty. You can add any king of design you want with the remaining dough: leaves, flowers, hearts, stars…

You are almost done! The last step is to brush the pie top with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake for 45 minutes at 350F (180C) until the crust is golden brown and the apples are soft.

Serve a la mode with homemade vanilla ice cream or a scoop of homemade whipped cream!
