Pressed flower are a super easy craft to do with kids (or not). It involves going outside and learning about flowers, where to find them, how to cut some and let some others, smell them, their different parts… The possibilities are endless! These pressed flowers framed will make a beautiful gift from kids or a great souvenir from any of your family vacation!
Here are the steps you will need to follow in order to get the best pressed flowers to frame!
Supplies
- Flowers
- 2 frames (you only need one frame but two glass panels)
- Tea towels
- Heavy books
- Glue
Choose and cut the flowers for your pressed flowers frame
This part is the best! Go outside with your kids and pick some flowers together!
Make sure you pick some that are not to bulky.
Let your creativity and your kids lead the way! Choose different colours, different shapes, different sizes. Some with the stem, some without. Some with the roots, some without…
Make sure all your flowers are clean and free of bugs and other creatures!
Press the flowers
In order to make pressed flowers framed you will need to dry up the fresh flower you just picked.
There are a few ways to dry up flowers but for this craft you need the flower to be pressed! A very simple way to achieve that is to lay the flowers flat on a hard surface and place some weight on it. A lot of people will tell you to place them inside a book but I find that it sometimes stain the book pages and that’s pretty annoying!
Here is how I do it:
- Lay the flower on a tea towel (or some paper towel) on a hard surface
- Spread them on the towel
- Place another tea towel on top
- Place a few heavy books on top
- Make sure it stays tightly pressed for a week or two
Remove the flowers and get the frame ready
After a couple weeks, make sure your flower are completely dry.
Remove all the books and gently uncover the pressed flowers.
Disassemble the frames and keep one frame and and two glass panels.
Clean the glass panels to remove any print, dust or any stain.
Make your pressed flowers framed
Now that you are done with all the preps it’s time to get creative!
- Let your kids (or not) arrange the pressed flowers on top of one of the glass panel.
- You can place the flowers floating around on the frame, place them in the shape of a bouquet, choose a minimalist approach and only place a few pressed flowers on your frame or, like me, let your kids go crazy and place a bunch of flowers everywhere!
- Secure the flowers with a dot of glue so nothing will fall or move when you put your frame up. Make sure you hide the glue behind larger parts of the flowers (leaves, big petals…). Stick the flowers on the back glass so it will be invisible.
- Gently place the other glass panel on top and close the frame.
- Clean up the glass and voila!
