For her 5th birthday, my daughter wanted a Mermaid party! So, she needed an Ocean Cake! She had a very specific idea about her cake, it needed to be two shades of blue, with waves, seaweed and little sea creatures all around! So of course, that’s what we did! And it was really easy but it looked great so I’m going to tell you how to make it if you ever feel like you need an Ocean Cake!
Ingredients you’ll need
- A cake! My daughter wanted a really tall strawberry cake so I doubled this recipe.
- Whipped cream
- Food colouring
- Fondant (homemade or not)
- Little ocean creatures molds (you can easy find the online or in a good craft or baking store)
- A decorating turn table
- A spatula
How to make a beautiful Ocean Cake
The day before, make your little sea creatures with coloured fondant. I prefer to colour little balls of white fondant so I get the exact shade I want but feel free to use coloured fondant, And now, get creative! Mix 2 or 3 different colours to give your creatures some interesting looks! You can make some seaweed with green fondant as well as little pieces of coral with red fondant too! Let everything dry for a day on a baking sheet.
Make your cake all the way to the first layer of whipped cream all around the cake. Let it cool down in the fridge for at least an hour. I like to put mine in the freezer for an hours so it will hold its shape better when I decorate.
Make 3 batches of whipped cream (find all my tip to make the perfect whipped cream here). One dark blue, one light blue and one plain white. I like to make 3 separate batches so I can incorporate the food colouring while whipping the cream.
Place your cake on a decorating turn table, you don’t have too but it makes it easier to spread the cream evenly.
Cover 3/4 or 2/3 (up to you) with the dark blue whipped cream. And the rest and the top with light blue whipped cream. Using a spatula, flatten the cream until the cake looks perfectly smooth.
Using the same spatula, make little waves all around the cake by moving the spatula up and down while the cake is turning.
Put some dot of white whipped cream here and there, on top of the waves to make it looks like actual waves.
Scoop some of the white whipped cream on top of the cake. Using a spoon, make some waves on top of the cake.
Right before serving your Ocean Cake, place the seaweeds and the little sea creatures wherever you want on the cake!
And voila! This beautiful Ocean Cake is ready!
Tip: Add a doll mermaid or a toy pirate boat on top of the cake and you’ll get a mermaid cake or a pirate cake!
